1934055cbe Please find a small patch to fix the brain damage "century" and
"millennium" date part implementation in postgresql, both in the code
and the documentation, so that it conforms to the official definition.
If you do not agree with the official definition, please send your
complaint to "pope@vatican.org". I'm not responsible for them;-)

With the previous version, the centuries and millenniums had a wrong
number and started the wrong year. Moreover century number 0, which does
not exist in reality, lasted 200 years. Also, millennium number 0 lasted
2000 years.

If you want postgresql to have it's own definition of "century" and
"millennium" that does not conform to the one of the society, just give
them another name. I would suggest "pgCENTURY" and "pgMILLENNIUM";-)

IMO, if someone may use the options, it means that postgresql is used for
historical data, so it make sense to have an historical definition. Also,
I just want to divide the year by 100 or 1000, I can do that quite easily.

24614a9880 Upgrade ALTER TABLE DROP COLUMN so that it can drop an OID column, and
remove separate implementation of ALTER TABLE SET WITHOUT OIDS in favor
of doing a regular DROP.  Also, cause CREATE TABLE to account completely
correctly for the inheritance status of the OID column.  This fixes
problems with dropping OID columns that have dependencies, as noted by
Christopher Kings-Lynne, as well as making sure that you can't drop an
OID column that was inherited from a parent.

89ab5c4abf Remove grotty special-case code in coerce_to_target_type() that
implemented casts to varchar and bpchar using a cast-to-text function.
This is a holdover from before we had pg_cast; it now makes more sense
to just list these casts in pg_cast.  While at it, add pg_cast entries
for the other direction (casts from varchar/bpchar) where feasible.

7665d1bc16 Teach psql to show the location of syntax errors visually, per recent
discussions.  Patch by Fabien Coelho and Tom Lane.  Still needs to be
taught about multi-screen-column kanji characters; Tatsuo has promised
to provide the needed infrastructure for that.

b88fa3b196 Generate a WARNING when the column types in a foreign key constraint are
incompatible enough to prevent indexscanning the referenced table.  Also,
improve the error message that pops out when we can't implement the FK at
all for lack of a usable equality operator.  Fabien Coelho, with some review
by Tom Lane.

bfd6f52b0e Allow 'Infinity' and '-Infinity' as input to the float4 and float8
types. Update the regression tests and the documentation to reflect
this. Remove the UNSAFE_FLOATS #ifdef.

This is only half the story: we still unconditionally reject
floating point operations that result in +/- infinity. See
recent thread on -hackers for more information.

e2ded829f6 Revise int2/int4/int8/float4/float8 input routines to allow for
any amount of leading or trailing whitespace (where "whitespace"
is defined by isspace()). This is for SQL conformance, as well
as consistency with other numeric types (e.g. oid, numeric).

Also refactor pg_atoi() to avoid looking at errno where not
necessary, and add a bunch of regression tests for the input
to these types.

1973971821 Per a brief conversation with Tom, I've created a patch for adding
support for 'week' within the date_trunc function.

Within the patch I added a couple of test cases and associated target
output, and changed the documentation to add 'week' appropriately.

2146bfc869 Emit a warning when an empty string is input to the oid, float4, and
float8 types. This begins the deprecation of this feature: in 7.6,
this input will be rejected.

Also added a new error code for warnings about deprecated features,
and updated the regression tests.

e97b8f2da9 Add CREATE TRIGGER, CREATE INDEX, and CREATE SEQUENCE to the list of
expressions supported by CREATE SCHEMA.

Also added the beginning of some regression tests for CREATE SCHEMA;
plenty more work is needed here.

98dcf085e3 Implement "WITH / WITHOID OIDS" clause for CREATE TABLE AS. This is
intended to allow application authors to insulate themselves from
changes to the default value of 'default_with_oids' in future releases
of PostgreSQL.

This patch also fixes a bug in the earlier implementation of the
'default_with_oids' GUC variable: code in gram.y should not examine
the value of GUC variables directly due to synchronization issues.

2fb67fa469 More bogosity in alter_table test: sometimes causes prepare test to fail

7ce9b7c0d8 This patch adds a new GUC var, "default_with_oids", which follows the
proposal for eventually deprecating OIDs on user tables that I posted
earlier to pgsql-hackers. pg_dump now always specifies WITH OIDS or
WITHOUT OIDS when dumping a table. The documentation has been updated.

04a4821ade Attached is a patch implementing factorial(), returning numeric. Points
to note:

1) arttype is numeric. I thought this was the best way of allowing
arbitarily large factorials, even though factorial(2^63) is a large
number. Happy to change to integers if this is overkill.
2) since we're accepting numeric arguments, the patch tests for floats.
If a numeric is passed with non-zero decimal portion, an error is raised
since (from memory) they are undefined.

42ce74bf17 COMMENT ON casts, conversions, languages, operator classes, and
large objects.  Dump all these in pg_dump; also add code to pg_dump
user-defined conversions.  Make psql's large object code rely on
the backend for inserting/deleting LOB comments, instead of trying to
hack pg_description directly.  Documentation and regression tests added.

1a908a00b0 Fix datetime input parsing to accept YYYY-MONTHNAME-DD and related syntaxes,
which had been unintentionally broken by recent changes to tighten up the
DateStyle rules for all-numeric date input.  Add documentation and
regression tests for this, too.

fa5c8a055a Cross-data-type comparisons are now indexable by btrees, pursuant to my
pghackers proposal of 8-Nov.  All the existing cross-type comparison
operators (int2/int4/int8 and float4/float8) have appropriate support.
The original proposal of storing the right-hand-side datatype as part of
the primary key for pg_amop and pg_amproc got modified a bit in the event;
it is easier to store zero as the 'default' case and only store a nonzero
when the operator is actually cross-type.  Along the way, remove the
long-since-defunct bigbox_ops operator class.

cc4baf4da3 Fix for possible referential integrity violation when a qualified ON INSERT
rule split the query into one INSERT and one UPDATE where the UPDATE
then hit's the just created row without modifying the key fields again.
In this special case, the new key slipped in totally unchecked.

eda80f09ff Repair interaction between IN-join processing and subselect pullup that
I inadvertently broke a few days ago (per report from Sean Thomas).

1e100176c4 This patch adds a new regression test for the UPDATE command. Right
now all that is tested is Rod Taylor's recent addition to allow
this syntax:

    UPDATE ... SET <col> = DEFAULT;

If anyone else would like to add more UPDATE tests, go ahead --
I just wanted to write a test for the above functionality, and
couldn't see an existing test that it would be appropriate
to add to.

e945246321 Fix ARRAY[] construct so that in multidimensional case, elements can
be anything yielding an array of the proper kind, not only sub-ARRAY[]
constructs; do subscript checking at runtime not parse time.  Also,
adjust array_cat to make array || array comply with the SQL99 spec.

ec646dbc65 Create a 'type cache' that keeps track of the data needed for any particular
datatype by array_eq and array_cmp; use this to solve problems with memory
leaks in array indexing support.  The parser's equality_oper and ordering_oper
routines also use the cache.  Change the operator search algorithms to look
for appropriate btree or hash index opclasses, instead of assuming operators
named '<' or '=' have the right semantics.  (ORDER BY ASC/DESC now also look
at opclasses, instead of assuming '<' and '>' are the right things.)  Add
several more index opclasses so that there is no regression in functionality
for base datatypes.  initdb forced due to catalog additions.

ecbed6e1b9 create_unique_plan() should not discard existing output columns of the
subplan it starts with, as they may be needed at upper join levels.
See comments added to code for the non-obvious reason why.  Per bug report
from Robert Creager.

9c2a7c2269 Apply (a somewhat revised version of) Greg Mullane's patch to eliminate
heuristic determination of day vs month in date/time input.  Add the
ability to specify that input is interpreted as yy-mm-dd order (which
formerly worked, but only for yy greater than 31).  DateStyle's input
component now has the preferred spellings DMY, MDY, or YMD; the older
keywords European and US are now aliases for the first two of these.

In the first case, enable_seqscan is set to its default value. After
setting it to off, it is obvious that the value has been changed for the
session only. In the third case, you can see that the value has been set
specifically for the user.

1e5a16cc9c The deferred trigger queue pushing to disk patch pointed out
that the regression tests for foreign keys didn't seem to test
a deferred constraint that was not satisified by a later
statement and was not made immediate by set constraints,
so here's a simple added test with a single invalid insert and
a commit.

e3b1b6c0cd Aggregates can be polymorphic, using polymorphic implementation functions.
It also works to create a non-polymorphic aggregate from polymorphic
functions, should you want to do that.  Regression test added, docs still
lacking.  By Joe Conway, with some kibitzing from Tom Lane.

bee217924d Support expressions of the form 'scalar op ANY (array)' and
'scalar op ALL (array)', where the operator is applied between the
lefthand scalar and each element of the array.  The operator must
yield boolean; the result of the construct is the OR or AND of the
per-element results, respectively.

Original coding by Joe Conway, after an idea of Peter's.  Rewritten
by Tom to keep the implementation strictly separate from subqueries.

b3c0551eda Create real array comparison functions (that use the element datatype's
comparison functions), replacing the highly bogus bitwise array_eq.  Create
a btree index opclass for ANYARRAY --- it is now possible to create indexes
on array columns.
Arrange to cache the results of catalog lookups across multiple array
operations, instead of repeating the lookups on every call.
Add string_to_array and array_to_string functions.
Remove singleton_array, array_accum, array_assign, and array_subscript
functions, since these were for proof-of-concept and not intended to become
supported functions.
Minor adjustments to behavior in some corner cases with empty or
zero-dimensional arrays.

- New non-reserved keywords (INCLUDING, EXCLUDING, DEFAULTS), SQL 200X

Opted not to extend for check constraints at this time.

As per the definition that it's user defined columns, OIDs are NOT
inherited.

945543d919 Add ipv6 address parsing support to 'inet' and 'cidr' data types.
Regression tests for IPv6 operations added.

        Documentation updated to document IPv6 bits.

        Stop treating IPv4 as an "unsigned int" and IPv6 as an array of
        characters.  Instead, always use the array of characters so we
        can have one function fits all.  This makes bitncmp(), addressOK(),
        and several other functions "just work" on both address families.

        add family() function which returns integer 4 or 6 for IPv4 or
        IPv6.  (See examples below)  Note that to add this new function
        you will need to dump/initdb/reload or find the correct magic
        to add the function to the postgresql function catalogs.

        IPv4 addresses always sort before IPv6.

        On disk we use AF_INET for IPv4, and AF_INET+1 for IPv6 addresses.
        This prevents the need for a dump and reload, but lets IPv6 parsing
        work on machines without AF_INET6.

        To select all IPv4 addresses from a table:

                select * from foo where family(addr) = 4 ...

        Order by and other bits should all work.

bff0422b6c Revise hash join and hash aggregation code to use the same datatype-
specific hash functions used by hash indexes, rather than the old
not-datatype-aware ComputeHashFunc routine.  This makes it safe to do
hash joining on several datatypes that previously couldn't use hashing.
The sets of datatypes that are hash indexable and hash joinable are now
exactly the same, whereas before each had some that weren't in the other.

e649796f12 Implement outer-level aggregates to conform to the SQL spec, with
extensions to support our historical behavior.  An aggregate belongs
to the closest query level of any of the variables in its argument,
or the current query level if there are no variables (e.g., COUNT(*)).
The implementation involves adding an agglevelsup field to Aggref,
and treating outer aggregates like outer variables at planning time.

fc8d970cbc Replace functional-index facility with expressional indexes. Any column
of an index can now be a computed expression instead of a simple variable.
Restrictions on expressions are the same as for predicates (only immutable
functions, no sub-selects).  This fixes problems recently introduced with
inlining SQL functions, because the inlining transformation is applied to
both expression trees so the planner can still match them up.  Along the
way, improve efficiency of handling index predicates (both predicates and
index expressions are now cached by the relcache) and fix 7.3 oversight
that didn't record dependencies of predicate expressions.
