d36bdc4e9d Invalidate partitions of table being attached/detached
Failing to do that, any direct inserts/updates of those partitions
would fail to enforce the correct constraint, that is, one that
considers the new partition constraint of their parent table.

Backpatch to 10.

4e02f88a4e Fix timing issue with ALTER TABLE's validate constraint
An ALTER TABLE to validate a foreign key in which another subcommand
already caused a pending table rewrite could fail due to ALTER TABLE
attempting to validate the foreign key before the actual table rewrite
takes place.  This situation could result in an error such as:

ERROR:  could not read block 0 in file "base/nnnnn/nnnnn": read only 0 of 8192 bytes

The failure here was due to the SPI call which validates the foreign key
trying to access an index which is yet to be rebuilt.

Similarly, we also incorrectly tried to validate CHECK constraints before
the heap had been rewritten.

The fix for both is to delay constraint validation until phase 3, after
the table has been rewritten.  For CHECK constraints this means a slight
behavioral change.  Previously ALTER TABLE VALIDATE CONSTRAINT on
inheritance tables would be validated from the bottom up.  This was
different from the order of evaluation when a new CHECK constraint was
added.  The changes made here aligns the VALIDATE CONSTRAINT evaluation
order for inheritance tables to be the same as ADD CONSTRAINT, which is
generally top-down.

cef2b8d52c Preserve clustered index after rewrites with ALTER TABLE
A table rewritten by ALTER TABLE would lose tracking of an index usable
for CLUSTER.  This setting is tracked by pg_index.indisclustered and is
controlled by ALTER TABLE, so some extra work was needed to restore it
properly.  Note that ALTER TABLE only marks the index that can be used
for clustering, and does not do the actual operation.

0a6c9c66da Revert "Skip WAL for new relfilenodes, under wal_level=minimal."

numerous buildfarm members, it was incompatible with parallel query, and
a test case assumed LP64.  Back-patch to 9.5 (all supported versions).

9d6215205e Skip WAL for new relfilenodes, under wal_level=minimal.
Until now, only selected bulk operations (e.g. COPY) did this.  If a
given relfilenode received both a WAL-skipping COPY and a WAL-logged
operation (e.g. INSERT), recovery could lose tuples from the COPY.  See
src/backend/access/transam/README section "Skipping WAL for New
RelFileNode" for the new coding rules.  Maintainers of table access
methods should examine that section.

To maintain data durability, just before commit, we choose between an
fsync of the relfilenode and copying its contents to WAL.  A new GUC,
wal_skip_threshold, guides that choice.  If this change slows a workload
that creates small, permanent relfilenodes under wal_level=minimal, try
adjusting wal_skip_threshold.  Users setting a timeout on COMMIT may
need to adjust that timeout, and log_min_duration_statement analysis
will reflect time consumption moving to COMMIT from commands like COPY.

Internally, this requires a reliable determination of whether
RollbackAndReleaseCurrentSubTransaction() would unlink a relation's
current relfilenode.  Introduce rd_firstRelfilenodeSubid.  Amend the
specification of rd_createSubid such that the field is zero when a new
rel has an old rd_node.  Make relcache.c retain entries for certain
dropped relations until end of transaction.

Back-patch to 9.5 (all supported versions).  This introduces a new WAL
record type, XLOG_GIST_ASSIGN_LSN, without bumping XLOG_PAGE_MAGIC.  As
always, update standby systems before master systems.  This changes
sizeof(RelationData) and sizeof(IndexStmt), breaking binary
compatibility for affected extensions.  (The most recent commit to
affect the same class of extensions was
089e4d405d0f3b94c74a2c6a54357a84a681754b.)

Kyotaro Horiguchi, reviewed (in earlier, similar versions) by Robert
Haas.  Heikki Linnakangas and Michael Paquier implemented earlier
designs that materially clarified the problem.  Reviewed, in earlier
designs, by Andrew Dunstan, Andres Freund, Alvaro Herrera, Tom Lane,

cb8962ce8e Further fix ALTER COLUMN TYPE's handling of indexes and index constraints.
This patch reverts all the code changes of commit e76de8861, which turns
out to have been seriously misguided.  We can't wait till later to compute
the definition string for an index; we must capture that before applying
the data type change for any column it depends on, else ruleutils.c will
deliverr wrong/misleading results.  (This fine point was documented
nowhere, of course.)

I'd also managed to forget that ATExecAlterColumnType executes once per
ALTER COLUMN TYPE clause, not once per statement; which resulted in the
code being basically completely broken for any case in which multiple ALTER
COLUMN TYPE clauses are applied to a table having non-constraint indexes
that must be rebuilt.  Through very bad luck, none of the existing test
cases nor the ones added by e76de8861 caught that, but of course it was
soon found in the field.

The previous patch also had an implicit assumption that if a constraint's
index had a dependency on a table column, so would the constraint --- but
that isn't actually true, so it didn't fix such cases.

Instead of trying to delete unneeded index dependencies later, do the
is-there-a-constraint lookup immediately on seeing an index dependency,
and switch to remembering the constraint if so.  In the unusual case of
multiple column dependencies for a constraint index, this will result in
duplicate constraint lookups, but that's not that horrible compared to all
the other work that happens here.  Besides, such cases did not work at all
before, so it's hard to argue that they're performance-critical for anyone.

2981e5a612 Fix ALTER COLUMN TYPE failure with a partial exclusion constraint.
ATExecAlterColumnType failed to consider the possibility that an index
that needs to be rebuilt might be a child of a constraint that needs to be
rebuilt.  We missed this so far because usually a constraint index doesn't
have a direct dependency on its table, just on the constraint object.
But if there's a WHERE clause, then dependency analysis of the WHERE
clause results in direct dependencies on the column(s) mentioned in WHERE.
This led to trying to drop and rebuild both the constraint and its
underlying index.

In v11/HEAD, we successfully drop both the index and the constraint,
and then try to rebuild both, and of course the second rebuild hits a
duplicate-index-name problem.  Before v11, it fails with obscure messages
about a missing relation OID, due to trying to drop the index twice.

This is essentially the same kind of problem noted in commit
20bef2c31: the possible dependency linkages are broader than what
ATExecAlterColumnType was designed for.  It was probably OK when
written, but it's certainly been broken since the introduction of
partial exclusion constraints.  Fix by adding an explicit check
for whether any of the indexes-to-be-rebuilt belong to any of the
constraints-to-be-rebuilt, and ignoring any that do.

In passing, fix a latent bug introduced by commit 8b08f7d48: in
get_constraint_index() we must "continue" not "break" when rejecting
a relation of a wrong relkind.  This is harmless today because we don't
expect that code path to be taken anyway; but if there ever were any
relations to be ignored, the existing coding would have an extremely
undesirable dependency on the order of pg_depend entries.

Also adjust a couple of obsolete comments.

9e6cd794c2 Fix ADD IF NOT EXISTS used in conjunction with ALTER TABLE ONLY
The flag for IF NOT EXISTS was only being passed down in the normal
recursing case. It's been this way since originally added in 9.6 in
commit 2cd40adb85 so backpatch back to 9.6.

91fc2a0883 Fix use-after-free bug when renaming constraints
This is an oversight from recent commit b13fd344.  While on it, tweak
the previous test with a better name for the renamed primary key.

Detected by buildfarm member prion which forces relation cache release
with -DRELCACHE_FORCE_RELEASE.  Back-patch down to 9.4 as the previous
commit.

da13d90a5f Make constraint rename issue relcache invalidation on target relation
When a constraint gets renamed, it may have associated with it a target
relation (for example domain constraints don't have one).  Not
invalidating the target relation cache when issuing the renaming can
result in issues with subsequent commands that refer to the old
constraint name using the relation cache, causing various failures.  One
pattern spotted was using CREATE TABLE LIKE after a constraint
renaming.

8aad248f7c Block creation of partitions with open references to its parent
When a partition is created as part of a trigger processing, it is
possible that the partition which just gets created changes the
properties of the table the executor of the ongoing command relies on,
causing a subsequent crash.  This has been found possible when for
example using a BEFORE INSERT which creates a new partition for a
partitioned table being inserted to.

Any attempt to do so is blocked when working on a partition, with
regression tests added for both CREATE TABLE PARTITION OF and ALTER
TABLE ATTACH PARTITION.

afe9b9e68a Add regression test for ATTACH PARTITION
This test case uses a SQL function as partitioning operator, whose
evaluation results in the table's relcache being rebuilt partway
through the execution of an ATTACH PARTITION command.

It is extracted from 39808e8, which fixed a bug where this test case
failed on master and REL_11_STABLE, but passed on REL_10_STABLE.  The
partitioning code has changed a lot during v11 development, so this
makes sure that any patch applied to REL_10_STABLE fixing a
partition-related bug does not break it again.

5862174ec7 Clarify use of temporary tables within partition trees
Since their introduction, partition trees have been a bit lossy
regarding temporary relations.  Inheritance trees respect the following
patterns:
1) a child relation can be temporary if the parent is permanent.
2) a child relation can be temporary if the parent is temporary.
3) a child relation cannot be permanent if the parent is temporary.
4) The use of temporary relations also imply that when both parent and
child need to be from the same sessions.

Partitions share many similar patterns with inheritance, however the
handling of the partition bounds make the situation a bit tricky for
case 1) as the partition code bases a lot of its lookup code upon
PartitionDesc which does not really look after relpersistence.  This
causes for example a temporary partition created by session A to be
visible by another session B, preventing this session B to create an
extra partition which overlaps with the temporary one created by A with
a non-intuitive error message.  There could be use-cases where mixing
permanent partitioned tables with temporary partitions make sense, but
that would be a new feature.  Partitions respect 2), 3) and 4) already.

It is a bit depressing to see those error checks happening in
MergeAttributes() whose purpose is different, but that's left as future
refactoring work.

Back-patch down to 10, which is where partitioning has been introduced,
except that default partitions do not apply there.  Documentation also
includes limitations related to the use of temporary tables with
partition trees.

ddde3b4f3e Fix crash when columns have been added to the end of a view.
expandRTE() supposed that an RTE_SUBQUERY subquery must have exactly
as many non-junk tlist items as the RTE has column aliases for it.
This was true at the time the code was written, and is still true so
far as parse analysis is concerned --- but when the function is used
during planning, the subquery might have appeared through insertion
of a view that now has more columns than it did when the outer query
was parsed.  This results in a core dump if, for instance, we have
to expand a whole-row Var that references the subquery.

To avoid crashing, we can either stop expanding the RTE when we run
out of aliases, or invent new aliases for the added columns.  While
the latter might be more useful, the former is consistent with what
expandRTE() does for composite-returning functions in the RTE_FUNCTION
case, so it seems like we'd better do it that way.

Per bug #14876 from Samuel Horwitz.  This has been busted since commit
ff1ea2173 allowed views to acquire more columns, so back-patch to all
supported branches.

8be1022425 Rethink the dependencies recorded for FieldSelect/FieldStore nodes.
On closer investigation, commits f3ea3e3e8 et al were a few bricks
shy of a load.  What we need is not so much to lock down the result
type of a FieldSelect, as to lock down the existence of the column
it's trying to extract.  Otherwise, we can break it by dropping that
column.  The dependency on the result type is then held indirectly
through the column, and doesn't need to be recorded explicitly.

Out of paranoia, I left in the code to record a dependency on the
result type, but it's used only if we can't identify the pg_class OID
for the column.  That shouldn't ever happen right now, AFAICS, but
it seems possible that in future the input node could be marked as
being of type RECORD rather than some specific composite type.

Likewise for FieldStore.

Like the previous patch, back-patch to all supported branches.

f85f88bcc2 Fix bug in deciding whether to scan newly-attached partition.
If the table being attached had different attribute numbers than the
parent, the old code could incorrectly decide it needed to be scanned.

b08df9cab7 Teach predtest.c about CHECK clauses to fix partitioning bugs.
In a CHECK clause, a null result means true, whereas in a WHERE clause
it means false.  predtest.c provided different functions depending on
which set of semantics applied to the predicate being proved, but had
no option to control what a null meant in the clauses provided as
axioms.  Add one.

Use that in the partitioning code when figuring out whether the
validation scan on a new partition can be skipped.  Rip out the
old logic that attempted (not very successfully) to compensate
for the absence of the necessary support in predtest.c.

ee252f074b Fix failure to remove dependencies when a partition is detached.
Otherwise, dropping the partitioned table will automatically drop
any previously-detached children, which would be unfortunate.

94aced8cd0 Move autogenerated array types out of the way during ALTER ... RENAME.
Commit 9aa3c782c added code to allow CREATE TABLE/CREATE TYPE to not fail
when the desired type name conflicts with an autogenerated array type, by
dint of renaming the array type out of the way.  But I (tgl) overlooked
that the same case arises in ALTER TABLE/TYPE RENAME.  Fix that too.
Back-patch to all supported branches.

3ec76ff1f2 Don't explicitly mark range partitioning columns NOT NULL.
This seemed like a good idea originally because there's no way to mark
a range partition as accepting NULL, but that now seems more like a
current limitation than something we want to lock down for all time.
For example, there's a proposal to add the notion of a default
partition which accepts all rows not otherwise routed, which directly
conflicts with the idea that a range-partitioned table should never
allow nulls anywhere.  So let's change this while we still can, by
putting the NOT NULL test into the partition constraint instead of
changing the column properties.

12590c5d33 Fix unsafe reference into relcache in constructed CommentStmt.
The CommentStmt made by RebuildConstraintComment() has to pstrdup the
relation name, else it will contain a dangling pointer after that
relcache entry is flushed.  (I'm less sure that pstrdup'ing conname
is necessary, but let's be safe.)  Failure to do this leads to weird
errors or crashes, as reported by Marko Elezovic.

Bug introduced by commit e42375fc8, so back-patch to 9.5 as that was.

6a4dda44e0 Fix VALIDATE CONSTRAINT to consider NO INHERIT attribute.
Currently, trying to validate a NO INHERIT constraint on the parent will
search for the constraint in child tables (where it is not supposed to
exist), wrongly causing a "constraint does not exist" error.

9139aa1942 Allow ALTER TABLE ONLY on partitioned tables
There is no need to forbid ALTER TABLE ONLY on partitioned tables,
when no partitions exist yet.  This can be handy for users who are
building up their partitioned table independently and will create actual
partitions later.

In addition, this is how pg_dump likes to operate in certain instances.

1d5fede4a9 Code review for c94e6942cefe7d20c5feed856e27f672734b1e2b.
validateCheckConstraint() shouldn't try to access the storage for
a partitioned table, because it no longer has any.  Creating a
_RETURN table on a partitioned table shouldn't be allowed, both
because there's no value in it and because trying to do so would
involve a validation scan against its nonexistent storage.

8b4d582d27 Allow partitioned tables to be dropped without CASCADE
Record partitioned table dependencies as DEPENDENCY_AUTO
rather than DEPENDENCY_NORMAL, so that DROP TABLE just works.

Remove all the tests for partitioned tables where earlier
work had deliberately avoided using CASCADE.

1c95f0b478 Use less-generic table name in new regression test case.
Creating global objects named "foo" isn't an especially wise thing,
but especially not in a test script that has already used that name
for something else, and most especially not in a script that runs
in parallel with other scripts that use that name :-(

5ad966ab1c Fix some more regression test row-order-instability issues.
Commit 0563a3a8b just introduced another instance of the same unsafe
testing methodology that appeared in 2ac3ef7a0, which I corrected in
257d81572.  Robert/Amit, please stop doing that.

Also look through the rest of f0e44751d's test cases, and correct some
other queries with underdetermined ordering of results from the system
catalogs.  These haven't failed in the buildfarm yet, but I don't
have any confidence in that staying true.

0563a3a8b5 Fix a bug in how we generate partition constraints.
Move the code for doing parent attnos to child attnos mapping for Vars
in partition constraint expressions to a separate function
map_partition_varattnos() and call it from the appropriate places.
Doing it in get_qual_from_partbound(), as is now, would produce wrong
result in certain multi-level partitioning cases, because it only
considers the current pair of parent-child relations.  In certain
multi-level partitioning cases, attnums for the same key attribute(s)
might differ between various levels causing the same attribute to be
numbered differently in different instances of the Var corresponding
to a given attribute.

With this commit, in generate_partition_qual(), we first generate the
the whole partition constraint (considering all levels of partitioning)
and then do the mapping, so that Vars in the final expression are
numbered according the leaf relation (to which it is supposed to apply).

3957b58b88 Fix ALTER TABLE / SET TYPE for irregular inheritance
If inherited tables don't have exactly the same schema, the USING clause
in an ALTER TABLE / SET DATA TYPE misbehaves when applied to the
children tables since commit 9550e8348b79.  Starting with that commit,
the attribute numbers in the USING expression are fixed during parse
analysis.  This can lead to bogus errors being reported during
execution, such as:
   ERROR:  attribute 2 has wrong type
   DETAIL:  Table has type smallint, but query expects integer.

Since it wouldn't do to revert to the original coding, we now apply a
transformation to map the attribute numbers to the correct ones for each
child.

f0e44751d7 Implement table partitioning.
Table partitioning is like table inheritance and reuses much of the
existing infrastructure, but there are some important differences.
The parent is called a partitioned table and is always empty; it may
not have indexes or non-inherited constraints, since those make no
sense for a relation with no data of its own.  The children are called
partitions and contain all of the actual data.  Each partition has an
implicit partitioning constraint.  Multiple inheritance is not
allowed, and partitioning and inheritance can't be mixed.  Partitions
can't have extra columns and may not allow nulls unless the parent
does.  Tuples inserted into the parent are automatically routed to the
correct partition, so tuple-routing ON INSERT triggers are not needed.
Tuple routing isn't yet supported for partitions which are foreign
tables, and it doesn't handle updates that cross partition boundaries.

Currently, tables can be range-partitioned or list-partitioned.  List
partitioning is limited to a single column, but range partitioning can
involve multiple columns.  A partitioning "column" can be an
expression.

Because table partitioning is less general than table inheritance, it
is hoped that it will be easier to reason about properties of
partitions, and therefore that this will serve as a better foundation
for a variety of possible optimizations, including query planner
optimizations.  The tuple routing based which this patch does based on
the implicit partitioning constraints is an example of this, but it
seems likely that many other useful optimizations are also possible.

a522fc3d80 Fix incorrect trigger-property updating in ALTER CONSTRAINT.
The code to change the deferrability properties of a foreign-key constraint
updated all the associated triggers to match; but a moment's examination of
the code that creates those triggers in the first place shows that only
some of them should track the constraint's deferrability properties.  This
leads to odd failures in subsequent exercise of the foreign key, as the
triggers are fired at the wrong times.  Fix that, and add a regression test
comparing the trigger properties produced by ALTER CONSTRAINT with those
you get by creating the constraint as-intended to begin with.

Per report from James Parks.  Back-patch to 9.4 where this ALTER
functionality was introduced.

fec1ad94df Include typmod when complaining about inherited column type mismatches.
MergeAttributes() rejects cases where columns to be merged have the same
type but different typmod, which is correct; but the error message it
printed didn't show either typmod, which is unhelpful.  Changing this
requires using format_type_with_typemod() in place of TypeNameToString(),
which will have some minor side effects on the way some type names are
printed, but on balance this is an improvement: the old code sometimes
printed one type according to one set of rules and the other type according
to the other set, which could be confusing in its own way.

Oddly, there were no regression test cases covering any of this behavior,
so add some.

f27a6b15e6 Mark CHECK constraints declared NOT VALID valid if created with table.
FOREIGN KEY constraints have behaved this way for a long time, but for
some reason the behavior of CHECK constraints has been inconsistent up
until now.

074c5cfbfb Fix handling of inherited check constraints in ALTER COLUMN TYPE (again).
The previous way of reconstructing check constraints was to do a separate
"ALTER TABLE ONLY tab ADD CONSTRAINT" for each table in an inheritance
hierarchy.  However, that way has no hope of reconstructing the check
constraints' own inheritance properties correctly, as pointed out in
bug #13779 from Jan Dirk Zijlstra.  What we should do instead is to do
a regular "ALTER TABLE", allowing recursion, at the topmost table that
has a particular constraint, and then suppress the work queue entries
for inherited instances of the constraint.

Annoyingly, we'd tried to fix this behavior before, in commit 5ed6546cf,
but we failed to notice that it wasn't reconstructing the pg_constraint
field values correctly.

As long as I'm touching pg_get_constraintdef_worker anyway, tweak it to
always schema-qualify the target table name; this seems like useful backup
to the protections installed by commit 5f173040.

In HEAD/9.5, get rid of get_constraint_relation_oids, which is now unused.
(I could alternatively have modified it to also return conislocal, but that
seemed like a pretty single-purpose API, so let's not pretend it has some
other use.)  It's unused in the back branches as well, but I left it in
place just in case some third-party code has decided to use it.

In HEAD/9.5, also rename pg_get_constraintdef_string to
pg_get_constraintdef_command, as the previous name did nothing to explain
what that entry point did differently from others (and its comment was
equally useless).  Again, that change doesn't seem like material for
back-patching.

I did a bit of re-pgindenting in tablecmds.c in HEAD/9.5, as well.

Otherwise, back-patch to all supported branches.

bc4996e61b Make ALTER .. SET SCHEMA do nothing, instead of throwing an ERROR.
This was already true for CREATE EXTENSION, but historically has not
been true for other object types.  Therefore, this is a backward
incompatibility.  Per discussion on pgsql-hackers, everyone seems to
agree that the new behavior is better.

8ab4a6bd3f Fix pg_dump to handle inherited NOT VALID check constraints correctly.
This case seems to have been overlooked when unvalidated check constraints
were introduced, in 9.2.  The code would attempt to dump such constraints
over again for each child table, even though adding them to the parent
table is sufficient.

In 9.2 and 9.3, also fix contrib/pg_upgrade/Makefile so that the "make
clean" target fully cleans up after a failed test.  This evidently got
dealt with at some point in 9.4, but it wasn't back-patched.  I ran into
it while testing this fix ...

47167b7907 Reduce lock levels for ALTER TABLE SET autovacuum storage options
Reduce lock levels down to ShareUpdateExclusiveLock for all autovacuum-related
relation options when setting them using ALTER TABLE.

Add infrastructure to allow varying lock levels for relation options in later
patches. Setting multiple options together uses the highest lock level required
for any option. Works for both main and toast tables.

253de7e1eb Fix make installcheck for serializable transactions.
Commit e5550d5fec66aa74caad1f79b79826ec64898688 added some new
tests for ALTER TABLE which involved table scans.  When
default_transaction_isolation = 'serializable' these acquire
relation-level SIReadLocks.  The test results didn't cope with
that.  Add SIReadLock as the minimum lock level for purposes of
these tests.

This could also be fixed by excluding this type of lock from the
my_locks view, but it would be a bug for SIReadLock to show up for
a relation which was not otherwise locked, so do it this way to
allow that sort of condition to cause a regression test failure.

There is some question whether we could avoid taking SIReadLocks
during these operations, but confirming the safety of that and
figuring out how to avoid the locks is not trivial, and would be
a separate patch.

Backpatch to 9.4 where the new tests were added.

1a56498e5f Make regression test output stable.
In the test query I added for ALTER TABLE retaining comments, the order of
the result rows was not stable, and varied across systems. Add an ORDER BY
to make the order predictable. This should fix the buildfarm failures.

e42375fc81 Retain comments on indexes and constraints at ALTER TABLE ... TYPE ...
When a column's datatype is changed, ATExecAlterColumnType() rebuilds all
the affected indexes and constraints, and the comments from the old
indexes/constraints were not carried over.

To fix, create a synthetic COMMENT ON command in the work queue, to re-add
any comments on constraints. For indexes, there's a comment field in
IndexStmt that is used.

This fixes bug #13126, reported by Kirill Simonov. Original patch by
Michael Paquier, reviewed by Petr Jelinek and me. This bug is present in
all versions, but only backpatch to 9.5. Given how minor the issue is, it
doesn't seem worth the work and risk to backpatch further than that.

b00982344a Improve error message and hint for ALTER COLUMN TYPE can't-cast failure.
We already tried to improve this once, but the "improved" text was rather
off-target if you had provided a USING clause.  Also, it seems helpful
to provide the exact text of a suggested USING clause, so users can just
copy-and-paste it when needed.  Per complaint from Keith Rarick and a
suggestion from Merlin Moncure.

Back-patch to 9.2 where the current wording was adopted.
