</variable></paragraph>
<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN10756" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="CHG">You can open and save data in the dBase file format (*.dbf file extension) in $[officename] Base or a spreadsheet. In %PRODUCTNAME Base, a dBase database is a folder that contains files with the .dbf file extension. Each file corresponds to a table in the database. Formulas and formatting are lost when you open and save a dBase file from %PRODUCTNAME.</paragraph>
<paragraph role="heading" id="par_idN10759" xml-lang="en-US" level="2" l10n="NEW">To Import a dBase File Into a Spreadsheet</paragraph>

<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN10730" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">The <emph>Import dBase files</emph> dialog opens.</paragraph>

<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN10777" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">The dBase file opens as a new Calc spreadsheet.</paragraph>
<paragraph role="warning" id="par_idN1074E" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">If you want to save the spreadsheet as a dBase file, do not alter or delete the first row in the imported file. This row contains information that is required by a dBase database.</paragraph>

<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN1076C" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">A %PRODUCTNAME Base database table is actually a link to an existing database.</paragraph>

<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN107B6" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">Locate the directory that contains the dBase file, and click <emph>OK</emph>.</paragraph>

<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN107BE" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">Click <emph>Create</emph>.</paragraph>
<paragraph role="paragraph" id="par_idN107C5" xml-lang="en-US" l10n="NEW">A link to the dBase file is added as a table to the Insight database. To view the table, click the <emph>Tables</emph> icon in the <emph>Database</emph> column of the Insight window, and double click the name of the table. If you edit the table in Insight, the changes are saved to the original dBase file.</paragraph>
